From a database perspective, WordPress‘s comment system is just as robust as its post system, but it lags behind in terms of customization options for comments. When the need arises to add custom fields to comments, finding a convenient plugin can be quite a challenge. Today, we’re introducing the ‘WP Comment Fields’ plugin, which enables you to effortlessly add custom fields to your WordPress comment forms. Although not as feature-rich as some custom field plugins for posts, it suffices for most basic comment customization needs.
The WP Comment Fields plugin allows you to easily create custom fields through a drag-and-drop interface in the backend. Currently, it supports text inputs, radio buttons, checkboxes, and dropdown selections. You can add an unlimited number of comment custom fields without any restrictions. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find information on when advanced features, such as image uploading, will be avAIlable. The plugin’s description mentions that the premium version supports file uploads, which is precisely what I need for adding images to comments. I reached out to the plugin author, who promptly replied, confirming this feature’s availability.
However, the last update on the WordPress directory was about 10 months ago, suggesting the developer might be occupied, leaving the release date of the advanced version uncertain. The premium version boasts features like:
1. File upload limits
2. Private download links (the purpose of which is unclear)
3. Date picker, mask input, autocomplete, and color selector options
The plugin’s code is well-structured, making it possible for developers to inspect the source code and add functionalities they require. In just two hours, I managed to add image uploading and a TextArea input type, Successfully implementing them in a client’s project.
Overall, while not perfect, the WP Comment Fields plugin offers a solid solution for comment customization, especially for those with coding knowledge who can extend its capabilities.
